Loch

At Aigas we have our very own loch, known as “Loch Cuil na Caillich” which for any non-Gaelic speakers means “hiding place of the old woman”. Come and visit us to hear who the old woman may have been and why she’s hiding in the loch! Along with a (possible) wee old lady, we have a wide variety of beasties lurking in the loch, from the terrifying dragonfly nymphs to tadpoles, mayfly nymphs and water fleas which you may find when pond dipping!

As you walk around the loch, see if you can spot Scotland’s own versions of the insect-eating plant the Venus Flytrap: Sundew and Butterwort. We also have the fantastic Bog Myrtle plant, which has the amazing property of being able to repel midges. It is not uncommon to hear the splash of leaping trout and you may even see the odd osprey coming in to fish! Don’t forget to have a look at our beaver lodge while you are here too.
