Eco-Centre AwardIn August 2004 Aigas was awarded the national “Eco Centre” award by Keep Scotland Tidy. We have the prestigious status of being the first Eco Centre in the Highlands!
In order to achieve this accolade we had to prove our commitment to waste and energy use management. We achieved this by living the principles as laid out in our environmental charter and by spreading the message of reduce, re-use and recycle through environmental education. We are passionate about doing our bit to lessen the ecological footprint mankind is leaving on our planet, and we strive to do more each year. We invite you to join us in our quest!.... Waste! We try to reduce our waste as much as possible. All paper, aluminium and steel cans, cardboard, tin foil and glass from kitchen, office and cabins is recycled. Plastic bottles and yogurt pots are re-used in our environmental programmes. All our organic food and garden waste is composted. Energy! With global warming already affecting our climate it is essential we cut our carbon emissions. At Aigas we have some renewable energy sources. Both Sequoia Lodge and Loch Cottage run their heating and hot water from a solar panel. By using energy efficient light bulbs and with good insulation we decrease our electricity usage. We encourage staff to be energy conscious. Chemicals! Wise choice of the chemicals we use is vital to the protection of our environment. The gardens at Aigas are run completely organically – no artificial herbicides, pesticides or fertilisers are used. Our composting regime provides a fantastic flow of nutrients back into the soil. The household uses environmentally friendly cleaning products wherever possible. Spread the word! We also encourage visiting schools to become Eco Schools, working towards creating a more sustainable environment for everyone. More than 2000 schools in Scotland are now Eco Schools, with over 10% of them achieving the highest level of award – the Green Flag status. Why not see if you can become an Eco School too? |
